Galle, Sri Lanka, March 9 :Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara hit a smashing century against Bangladesh here on Friday to cross Sunil Gavaskar's career total of 10,122 runs.

Sangakkara's 142 came off 226 balls, with 16 fours and three sixes and he shared a 124 run stand with Lahiru Thirimanne, who was unbeaten on 74, when play was called off with four overs to go, due to rain in the first Test against Bangladesh.

Sangakkara also became the first batsman to score 1000 Test runs against Bangladesh and equaled Mahela Jayawardene's Sri Lanka record for most Test hundreds.

The former Sri Lankan captain returned to cricket after a gap of more than two months. He was not even allowed to play a warm-up game at Matara ahead of the first Test.

With little match practice behind him, Sangakkara played Friday's first Test and posted his 31st Test century, as Sri Lanka finished on 361 for three at stumps.

The first ball Sangakkara received was a short and wide delivery from Shahadat Hossain, which he cut for four between gully and point. He never looked back from thereon, reaching his century shortly before tea.

He was dropped on 111 by Mohammad Ashraful at mid-on. Sohag Gazi was the unlucky bowler, but it was he who dismissed the star batsman eventually, when Jahurul Islam took a catch on the second attempt at short extra cover.

All three Sri Lankan wickets to were captured by Sohag.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was aggressive right from the start, but was dismissed for 54 that came off 63 balls, with the help of nine fours.

Dimuth Karunaratne looked solid but was ruled leg before wicket in the afternoon session for 41.
