SA20, Cricket South Africa's contribution to the umpteen T20 leagues germinating in every corner of the world, got off to a sensational start in its inaugural edition. It was a major success from cost, reception, attendance and viewership point of view. Since there is anticipation with every new tournament, the first season somehow gets the audience. Still, the difficulty is maintaining it and growing in the subsequent editions, where the challenge lies for SA20 in 2024.
Since there is a T20 World Cup around the corner, the SA20 becomes rather crucial not just for South Africa and their players but also the international stars as most of the England white-ball stars will be participating in the tournament apart from a few players from the West Indies, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw, the selectors will have their eyes on them and all three will be keen to go big in the tournament with a place in the T20 World Cup squad in sight.
There are a few changes in the squads from the previous seasons and obviously injury to a few key stars have made the difference, but the SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith during the captains' meet was excited, expecting the second edition to be bigger and better than the first one. “In my opinion, the teams look much stronger than in Season 1. There is incredible local talent and some superstars from around the world that have joined us. We know the competitive nature of the six franchises and we expect the cricketing stories to be fantastic again” Smith said.
