Cape Town, Jan 2: Vernon Philander took one of the quickest five-wicket hauls in tests as New Zealand's batting lineup crumbled to 45 all out on the opening morning of the first test against South Africa at Newlands on Wednesday.
Philander had 5-4 in just 4.1 overs before ending with 5-7 after new Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum opted to bat first in Cape Town's New Year test.
Only Kane Williamson (13) made it to double figures for the under-fire tourists as New Zealand was bowled out before lunch for its third lowest score and the 12th lowest total of all time.
Dale Steyn became the fourth South African to take 300 test wickets, reaching the mark in typical fast bowler style when he knocked Doug Bracewell's off stump out the ground.
