Sharjah, United Arab Emirates: Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews frustrated Pakistan with a patient half century and led his team to 302-6 at lunch on Friday's second day of the decisive third test.
Mathews was unbeaten on 67 off 181 balls and debutant Dilruwan Perera was not out on 29 after Pakistan took only one wicket in the session.
Sri Lanka resumed at 220-5 and Jayawardene added seven to his overnight score before he was caught at fine leg for 35 when he pulled Mohammad Talha in the sixth over.
Mathews, dropped on zero Thursday evening, and Perera defied Pakistan spinners by putting on 63 runs with Sri Lanka's captain raising his patient 13th test fifty in three hours and 50 minutes off 157 balls with three fours.
