Afghanistan register their best-ever run-chase in ODIs as Pakistan slump to embarrassing World Cup record

Afghanistan are on a history-making run in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup that has sent Pakistan to the brink of early elimination as the Men in Green suffered their third loss in the tournament. It seemed like Pakistan was a low-ranked team and Afghanistan was the big one, not for one moment, especially in the run-chase, that the Men in Green challenged. It was as proper cruise to the victory as all four batters Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah and HAshmatullah Shahidi contributed to get their side over the line.

This was Afghanistan's only third victory in Cricket World Cup history having beaten Scotland in the 2015 edition and England a few days ago in this edition only. Afghanistan, who have flattered to deceive in multi-nation tournaments for quite too long, are finally showing what they can do when at their best.

283 was also Afghanistan's highest run-chase in ODI cricket history. Afghanistan's highest score in the second innings is 288 in World Cups but that came in a losing cause. Afghanistan's highest run-chase was also the highest by any team in World Cup history against Pakistan as no team had chased down 275-plus against the Men in Green. The previous highest was 274 by India in the 2003 edition.

283 by Afghanistan - Chennai, 2023
274 by India - Centurion, 2003
267 by West Indies - Birmingham, 1975
243 by South Africa - Karachi, 1996
233 by England - Manchester, 1983

Pakistan's loss meant both the teams are now level on points after playing five games respectively and chances of both qualifying for the semis look tough as do England's.
