Mumbai: Former Team India cricketer Vinod Kambli was rushed on Friday to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital  because of timely help from a Mumbai traffic constable.

Kambli had a sudden heart seizure while driving his white-coloured Mitsubishi Pajero. The moment Kambli felt he was going to have a heart attack, he pulled aside his Pajero near a police vehicle parked on Eastern Express highway on Friday at 9:30 am.

Kambli was driving from Chembur to his home in Bandra. He told traffic constable Kumardatta Shendge to rush him to a nearby hospital.

Kumardatta contacted his boss Senior Inspector Sujata Patil, who was patrolling in the vicinity. Patil called the traffic control room and asked that a path be cleared to take Kambli to Bandra.

Sujata Patil said, Kambli was in severe pain. "He kept saying 'someone is trying to kill me', 'help me'. Kumardatta held his arms throughout the journey, massaging him, till we reached Lilavati Hospital".

Kambli had already informed his wife, who had arranged for an ambulance from Bandra.

Kambli's condition is now stable inside the ICU in Lilavati Hospital.
