Leeds: India were allout at 253 against England chasing the target of 295, thus losing the 5th ODI by 41 runs but winning the 5-match series by 3-1 here at Leeds, Headingley on Friday.

England avoided a whitewash by India in their one-day series by winning the fifth and final match by 41 runs mainly due to Joe Root's 113 on his home ground.

Powered by Root's second ODI century, England posted 294-7 after being put into bat at Headingley to give the world champions a challenging target for the first time in this lopsided series.

Ajinkya Rahane (0) and Virat Kohli (13) fell cheaply to James Anderson early in the reply before Moeen Ali's offspin accounted for Shikhar Dhawan (31) and Suresh Raina (18), leaving India on 91-4 and well behind the run rate.

Ambati Rayudu's 53 and some big late hits from Ravindra Jadeja (87) couldn't stop England bowling out India for 253 to end a miserable series on a high.

Earlier, Looking to complete a 4-0 sweep after a washout in the first ODI, India put the beleaguered hosts into bat and reduced them to 117-4 in 29 overs after Eoin Morgan (14) was stumped.

Root (113 off 108 balls) and Jos Buttler (49 off 40 balls) ensured there was no repeat of previous England collapses in this series by putting on 108 for the fifth wicket, before Root reached his second ODI century off 105 balls with a sweep for six.

Opener Alastair Cook, whose ODI captaincy is under pressure at the start of the long buildup to the 2015 World Cup, hit 46 -- again missing out on a big score after another encouraging start.

Allrounder Ben Stokes weighed in with 33 off 23 balls late on as the Indian attack was posed questions for the first time in the series.

India will now play England in an only T20 international on Sunday 7th September 2014.

The squads:

England: Alastair Cook (Captain), Alex Hales, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, James Tredwell, Steven Finn, James Anderson
