Constantly clocking over 140 kmph, the coaching staff was impressed by his ability, and kept him in the radar for a very long time, until they found the right time to blood him. Taskin made his T20 debut for Bangladesh in the World T20, and later retained in the ODI squad for the India series in June 2014.

He became the eighth bowler and first Bangladeshi bowler in the history of One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to take five wickets or more on debut. Taskin ran through the Indian top-order as he produced an emphatic spell of 8-0-28-5 in a rain-truncated match that saw India collapsing like heap of cards. He also registered the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler on ODI debut eclipsing Sohag Gazi's four for 29 against West Indies in 2012.
At 19 years and 75 days, Taskin is the youngest Bangladesh bolwer to pick up 5 wickets in an ODI and the 4th youngest overall. Waqar Younis is the youngest, having acheived the feat in 18 years and 164 days, followed by Wasim Akram in 18 years and 266 days and Aftab Ahmed in 18 years and 361 days.
