Christchurch, New Zealand: Trent Boult and Tim Southee combined to take five wickets, including Boult's 100th in tests, as New Zealand dismissed Sri Lanka for 138 and forced it to follow on 303 runs behind on the second day of the first cricket test at Hagley Oval.
Neil Wagner removed captain Angelo Mathews for the innings top-score of 50 and finished with three lower order wickets as New Zealand bowled out Sri Lanka in 42.4 overs to take command of the match and two-test series.
Boult finished with 3-25, Wagner with 3-60, Southee with 2-17 and Jimmy Neesham with 2-28 in an outstanding combined bowling performance.
Captain Brendon McCullum was quick to enforce the follow on in a match that still has three days and one session remaining.
Boult dismissed openers Dimuth Karunaratne (0) and Kaushal Silva (4), then removed Kumar Sangakkara for six to finish with 3-11 from seven overs in a potent opening spell.
Southee took a slip catch from Boult's bowling, then dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne (24) and Niroshan Dickwella in the same over.
Mathews provided lone resistance, making his 19th half century in tests from 83 balls with three fours and two sixes, bringing up 50 with a four and a six off consecutive balls from Wagner.
But he was out two balls later, charging a delivery outside off stump and providing a simple catch to Tom Latham at third man. Wagner bowled well with the older ball, removing Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene (10) and Tharindu Kaushal (6).
Boult swung the new ball both ways during his opening spell, confounding the Sri Lankan batsmen and highlighting the inadequacy of the Sri Lankan bowlers' performance after they had won the toss on the first day.
He trapped Karunaratne and Silva lbw with in-swingers inside the first five overs, then denied Sangakkara a chance to become the fifth player in test history to surpass 12,000 runs.
Sangakkara began his 129th test needing 12 runs to reach the milestone but was only halfway to that total when he was caught by Southee from Boult, leaving Sri Lanka 15-3.
Karunaratne was Boult's 100th test wicket and he became the 13th New Zealander to reach that milestone.
Mathews and Thirimanne steadied the innings with a partnership of 43 for the fourth wicket before Southee struck the double blow in the 26th over which restored New Zealand's ascendant position.
