St. John's, Antigua: Jonathan Trott returned to the England side after almost 18 months away from international cricket and immediately opened the batting against the West Indies alongside captain Alastair Cook.
Cook lost the toss on Monday but was asked to bat first by West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin in the first match of the series.
The South African-born Trott has been steadily rebuilding his career since going home from England's Ashes tour of Australia in November 2013 and dealing with a stress-related condition. But Trott was out for a duck in the first over.
Before the start of play there was a moment's silence for Richie Benaud, the former Australia captain turned renowned commentator who died at the age of 84 last week.
Lineups:
West Indies: Devon Smith, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Jermaine Blackwood, Denesh Ramdin (captain), Jason Holder, Jerome Taylor, Kemar Roach, Sulieman Benn.
England: Alastair Cook (captain), Jonathan Trott, Gary Ballance, Joe Root, Ian Bell, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Chris Jordan, Stuart Broad, James Tredwell. James Anderson.
