Johannesburg: Indian bowlers struck in the last session and restricted South African batsmen from getting the lead on the 2nd day of the first test match being played here on Thursday.
South African pair of captain Graeme Smith (68) and Hashim Amla (36) were looking in good mood towards taking the lead on Day 2 but Ishant Sharma struck after lunch and picked 2 wickets on back to back deliveries.
Ishant first clean bowled Amla and then on the very next delivery he got Kallis out lbw for a duck.
Soon afterwards, Zaheer struck quickly removing Smith.
Shami also took two quick wickets in the last session dismissing AB de Villiers (13) and Duminy (2).
South African all rounder Vernon Philander had a good day with both the ball and bat too.
He took 4 wickets earlier in the first session and then in the last session he scored 48 not out.
At the close of day's play, Faf du Plesis (17) and Philander (48) were there at the crease.
Earlier resuming on Day 2, India were expected to put on a decent total on the scoreboard after Virat Kohli and Rahane showed their staying power. But the Indian inning lasted just 13 overs and Philander was the one who did the maximum damage, taking three of the remaining five wickets.
South Africa took advantage of the morning moisture dismissing Dhoni first. He was caught behind off Morne Morkel. He added just two more runs to his overnight score of 17. Rahane was also caught behind the wicket off Philander who took three of the five wickets that fell in the first session. Rahane made 47.
While Ashwin remained not out on 11, Zaheer, Shamia and Ishant did not bother the scorer and went back to the pavilion without offering any resistance.
For South Africa Philander took four wickets for 61 and Morkel accounted for three wickets giving away 34 runs.
