Bengaluru: The second day's play in the second cricket Test between India and South Africa was called off without a ball being bowled as there was a steady downpour throughout the day.

It started with steady drizzle in the morning which stopped around 10 am. Play was supposed to start at 10:30 am with the players going through their pre-match routines.  However, just when it was about to start the drizzle was back and it got heavier as the time progressed.

The grounds staff had to bring the covers back and when the rain did not stop till 12:30, the writing was on the wall and calling off the day's play was the only option left for the on-field umpires Ian Gould and Richard Kettleborough.

The worst part is that there is forecast for heavy rain tomorrow also which will slowly decrease the chances of having a result oriented match.

If weather permits, the match will start at 9:15 am tomorrow.

On the first day, South Africa were bowled out for 214 in 59 overs with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja grabbing four wickets apiece.

AB de Villiers top-scored 85 for South Africa. In reply, India progressed steadily to reach 80 for no loss at close of play, with Shikhar Dhawan stroking his way to 45 while Murali Vijay was unbeaten on 28.
