There are few sportsmen who, like Sachin Tendulkar, go out at the very top but Nasser Hussain was one. Hussain scored a century to win a Test against New Zealand in 2004 and promptly called it a day - on 96 Tests.
He had told his friends the night before that he was considering packing it all in whatever happened in the conclusion of the match. His reasoning was that a certain Andrew Strauss now deserved a place and captain Michael Vaughan was due to return from injury in the next Test.
He could have played a hundred Tests but he was adamant to call it a day. What a way to go! It happens to few to go out on such a high at the home of cricket and Nasser called it absolutely correctly. It was time for a new era - one that would take England to the Ashes and beyond.
