DHAKA, Bangladesh: Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was banned from cricket for eight years on Wednesday for match-fixing.

A special three-man tribunal of the Bangladesh Cricket Board issued the punishment after Ashraful pleaded guilty to being part of fixing a match in the Bangladesh Premier League between Dhaka Gladiators and Chittagong Kings in 2013.

In the same case, Gladiators managing director Shihab Chowdhury was found guilty and banned for 10 years, and former Sri Lanka spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who also confessed, was suspended for 18 months.

Ashraful, who led Bangladesh in 13 tests and 38 one-day internationals, was also fined one million takas ($12,900).

Gladiators chairman Selim Choudhury, chief executive Gaurav Rawat, former Bangladesh spinner Mohammad Rafique, and English cricketer Darren Stevens were found not guilty.

"Mohammad Ashraful was found guilty of all four charges and has been banned from cricket for eight years," said Khademul Islam Chowdhury, chairman of the three-man tribunal and a former High Court judge.

Ashraful's lawyer said they will consider an appeal.

"We will decide on that after getting the copy of the verdict," his lawyer, Samit Patel, said.
