Birmingham, England: Joe Root and Jos Buttler fired explosive centuries as England blasted 408-9, its highest ever score in one-day international cricket, against New Zealand in their series opener at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Root needed 71 deliveries to reach three figures and Buttler only 66, England's second-fastest ton, before falling for 129.
The tourists won the toss and started superbly with Trent Boult removing Jason Roy with the first ball.
But Root spearheaded England's fightback with some aggressive batting, alongside Alex Hales (20) and captain Eoin Morgan (50).
Root brought up his century with two through mid-on but only added four more to his fifth one-day century for England before swiping out at Boult and edging behind to Luke Ronchi.
England wobbled from 171-2 to 202-6, with Morgan falling before Root and Ben Stokes (10) and debutant Sam Billings (3) going swiftly after before Buttler revived his team's innings with a stunning knock.
The wicket-keeper batsman hit 13 fours and five sixes, wilting New Zealand's bowling attack with 129 runs from 77 balls.
Buttler already has England's fastest century to his name, from 61 balls, and Root's innings was his country's third-fastest ton in one-day cricket.
Adil Rashid assisted Buttler with 69 and the duo put on 177 for the seventh wicket, a world record in one-day cricket, as England eclipsed its previous record of 391 against Bangladesh in 2005.
Rashid and Chris Jordan (2) were dismissed in consecutive balls by Grant Elliott in the last over and with England on 394, it seemed set to fall short of the elusive 400 with three balls remaining in the innings.
But Liam Plunkett smashed two brutal sixes in the final three deliveries to haul England past the figure, setting an imposing target for the World Cup runners-up to take victory.
