With dwindling career Hirwani made his last appearance in Kolkata in 1996 against South Africa.
In 2001, he was picked in the fourteen for play Australia at home, but he never made the final eleven. After the series, he went to the press, criticising Indian captain Sourav Ganguly for not choosing him. And that was the end of Hirwana saga.
