Johannesburg, Mar 27: Cricket South Africa and the sports ministry will hold a review into the national team's shock World Cup quarterfinal exit, it was announced today.

CSA said it has put the process in place to learn the lessons from the disappointing World Cup exit and plan the way forward.

"We are obviously very disappointed at the manner of the team's exit from the World Cup and we understand the frustrations of the country," CSA Acting President AK Khan said in a statement.

"We will now await the report of the team manager. It is important that we move forward but that at the same time we take on board the lessons that need to be learned.

"But at the same time this is our team and we must stand by them. It was heartening to see the reception they received from the fans when they arrived home," said the statement.

CSA also announced that a new captain and coach will be be appointed soon following the quitting of Graeme Smith and Corrie van Zyl from the respective roles.

"The process is also under way to appoint new national coach as well as the captain of the ODI squad. Time is on our side. The Proteas will not be in action again until October when they play Australia in two Castle Tests and three ODIs," Khan said.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula said his ministry would meet with CSA officials in the first week of next month after the Proteas continued a dismal run in crucial games at the event with a quarterfinal loss to New Zealand.

"Let us draw lessons to be learned from this painful experience. We believe we owe it to the nation to provide a well-researched review of the results of our participation in the championship (World Cup)," Mbalula said.

Team manager Mohammed Moosajee said CSA would also hold its own "debrief and review" and conceded that the team may have been affected by its underachieving past at the World Cup.

South Africa have lost every one of the five knockout games it has played at the showpiece tournament, dating back to its debut in 1992.

"We have to accept that maybe the burden of previous generations remains with us," Moosajee said. PTI
