Bengaluru: Bengaluru police today arrested Team India cricketer Amit Mishra in connection with a assault case. He was however granted bail after 3 hours of interrogation.

Mishra is facing charges of assaulting a woman in his hotel room here last month.

On a complaint from the woman, Mishra was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 328 (causing hurt with intent to commit an offence).

The woman had lodged a complaint in Ashok Nagar police station last month, alleging that the cricketer had sexually assaulted her when she went to see him in his hotel room.

Mishra was arrested after nearly three hours of questioning at Ashoknagar police station and released on bail later, DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil told PTI.

Complying with a summons issued by the Bengaluru police last week after he was booked for the charges based on the complaint by the woman, Mishra, who was given seven days time, appeared before them.

The 32-year-old spin bowler is part of the Indian Test squad for first two Tests against visiting South Africa. The first test will be played in Mohali on November 5.

Days after the matter came to light, the woman had said she had decided in principle to withdraw her complaint but did not do so.

“I am waiting for Mishra to appear in the police station.  We both will amicably withdraw the case. We were friends. We fought, and continue to remain friends hereafter,” she had said earlier.

The woman, who had approached the police on September 27, in her complaint claimed that she knew Mishra for the past three years and the alleged incident took place in a hotel room where the cricketer was staying when he came to the city along with the Indian team for a training camp last month.

The complainant had said she went to Mishra's room in his absence. At that time, Mishra also came there and (they) had a heated argument following which, she alleged, the cricketer assaulted her and abused her. Consequently, an FIR was lodged.
