Hyderabad, Sep 16: Ayazuddin, son of Moradabad Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin, died in hospital today six days after he was seriously injured in an accident involving his high-end sports bike.

19-year-old “Ayaz was on ventilator support for six days.  He suffered heavy internal bleeding while his brain became dysfunctional yesterday. One of his kidneys was also removed through surgery,” Apollo Hospital's CEO Hari Prasad said.

“He died at 11.51 AM due to hypoxic encephalopathy (a condition when there is not enough oxygen getting into the brain),” he said.

Azharuddin, a former Indian cricket captain, and other relatives were on Ayaz's bedside when the end came, hospital sources said Ayaz, a budding cricketer, met with the road accident on the Outer Ring Road here on September 11 when his sports bike skidded.

While his cousin Azmal, who was riding pillion, died within an hour of the accident, Ayaz was admitted to the ICU of Apollo Hospital in an “extremely critical condition.” He was in a “critical” condition throughout even as tests indicated dysfunction of his brain.

Ayaz is the younger son of Azharuddin with his estranged wife Naureen. Azharuddin later married Bollywood actress Sangeeta Bijlani. Azharuddin and Naureen's elder son Asaduddin is also a budding cricketer.

“Ayazuddin was an all-rounder. He was good at off-spin and also batting in the middle-order,” his coach Maheshwar Singh said.

Ayaz, who was a student of B.Com at St. Mary's College in the city, initially played for East Marredpally Cricket Club (EMCC) and then shifted to State Bank of India (SBI). He had also played for the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet.  Much like his father, Ayaz was a soft-spoken and a shy youth, he Singh said.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said the burial will take place in the evening. He also asked the media to respect the family's privacy.
