Melbourne: The Australian women's cricket team Friday offered condolences to the family of Phillip Hughes, who died Thursday after being hit by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match.

"The Australian women's cricket team players and management have been devastated by this tragic event. As members of the Australian cricket family we share the pain of losing a fine cricketer, a loveable larrikin and above all, an honourable young man. We extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip's family, friends, colleagues and teammates," captain Meg Lanning said in a statement.

"We all have a great love of cricket. What we love most about the game is the camaraderie with our teammates both on-and-off the field. Our teammates are like family on the field and on the road. As a player we admired Phillip's tenacity and commitment. As a person we admired his character, humility and goodwill."

Lanning's team also sympathised with the players and officials who were present during the fatal incident Tuesday at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

"We offer our support to players all around the country who played with Phillip and against Phillip, particularly those players and match officials who were at the SCG Tuesday. We stand side-by-side with our brothers, the Australian men's team, and grieve with them," she said.

"We are one team playing for one nation, representing cricketers of all levels from all corners of this country. We are lucky enough to enjoy each other's company through our shared cricket pursuits and also on a personal level away from cricket stadiums. We are one team on-and-off the field."
