Meanwhile former England captain Adam Hollioake said there would be people who would describe as "disappointing" English broadcaster Jonathan Agnew's view that the Australian team betrayed the spirit of the late batsman Phillip Hughes through their actions during the recent Test series against India.

"I think it'll be seen as disappointing that sledging and [Hughes'] death was mentioned in the same breath," said Melbourne-born Hollioake, who captained England's one-day team and also played four Tests for England after moving there as a child. "Phillip Hughes' death was the result of a terrible, terrible  accident ...

 "I understand there are some people who see cricket as a gentleman's game - and Jonathan Agnew is definitely a gentleman - and while we're all entitled to our opinion there are others who want to play hard.

 "I think the beauty of cricket is we all play in different ways. I will say that, in my view, if people didn't say anything to anyone [on the field]  it'd be a pretty boring game."
