Melbourne, Australia: Chris Rogers recovered from a nasty blow to the head to score a dogged half century as Australia reached 96-3 at tea on the second day of the fourth test against England.

Jimmy Anderson (2-32) dismissed Michael Clarke in the only wicket of the middle session after Australia lost opener David Warner and Shane Watson before lunch in pursuit of England's first-innings 255.

Stuart Broad smacked a short ball into the visor of Rogers' helmet shortly after lunch, drawing blood near his temple. But after receiving attention on the pitch, the left-hander continued his innings untroubled and was unbeaten on 50 at the break with Steve Smith on 14.

Earlier, Mitchell Johnson completed a five-wicket haul to help dismiss England on the second morning.

England added just 24 runs to its overnight score as Johnson claimed the wickets of Tim Bresnan, Kevin Pietersen and Stuart Broad in short succession, before spinner Nathan Lyon bowled Monty Panesar to end the innings.

After an aggressive start, David Warner was out for 9 when he top-edged while attempting to flick an Anderson ball down the leg-side for Jonny Bairstow's first test catch as wicketkeeper.

Shane Watson offered a thin inside edge off Ben Stokes to Bairstow shortly before lunch to take the gloss of Australia's dominant morning.

Johnson, who claimed two wickets late on day one with the new ball, claimed immediate success on day 2, dismissing Bresnan (1) with the first delivery of the morning's second over and bowling Pietersen for 71 four balls later.

Pietersen, who played an uncharacteristically watchful knock to anchor the England innings Thursday, showed a change of intent by smashing a four off the first ball of the second day.

His more expansive style of play proved his undoing when he attempted a big swing, only to have his stumps scattered by a scything Johnson delivery.
