ODI debut v Bangladesh at Chittagong in December 2003 :  Dhoni did not have a great start to his ODI career, getting run out for a duck on debut. In spite of an average series against Bangladesh, Dhoni was picked for the Pakistan ODI series. In the second match of the series, Dhoni in his fifth one-day international, scored 148 in Vishakapatnam off only 123 deliveries. Captained India to victory in the 2011 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 91 in the final. Appointed captain of India's limited-overs teams in September 2007.Dhoni, who has played 84 limited-overs internationals, got the oppurtunity to  lead the one-day team for the home series against Australia. He made Team India the World champions in 2011 after a gap of 24 years. Dhoni finished the game with a incredible six to fulfill the wish of millions of Indians who wanted to see India becoming the World champions on their home soil.

 
The ICC commenced a tournament for the shortest version of the game in 2007. The first ever T20 World Cup, was held in South Africa and India lifted the trophy.Mahendra Singh Dhoni led India to victory in the World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007 during his first stint as captain.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the ODI Player of the Year 2008 award at the LG ICC Awards ceremony in Dubai,becoming the first Indian player to get this particular award. Dhoni beat off tough competition from team-mate Sachin Tendulkar.
