London, Feb 5 : Former England captain Andrew Strauss was on Monday awarded honorary life membership of the Merylbone Cricket Club (MCC), the prestigious English institution responsible for safeguarding the game's rules.

Strauss, 35,  announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August last year.

He guided England to consecutive Ashes victories over Australia in 2009 and 2011. Strauss is the 27th former England skipper to become an honorary life member of the MCC.

“Thank you so much to all at MCC for the offer of honorary life membership,” Strauss said. “It is, of course, a great honour to receive this invitation and I clearly have no hesitation in accepting.”

MCC president Mike Griffith said: “Andrew Strauss has had a remarkable cricketing career and made an outstanding contribution to the game.

“His achievements for Middlesex and England — particularly at Lord's — are numerous and rightly celebrated.”
