Adelaide Strikers have announced Matthew Short as their new skipper ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season 13. Short has taken over from Travis Head, who was previously leading Strikers. Interestingly, Short led Strikers in the last season and racked up an eye-catching performance at an individual level.
The star batting allrounder notched up 458 runs and snared 11 wickets in the 2022-23 season of the marquee tournament. His impressive display in the season helped him make his T20I and ODI debut for Australia and he is one of the front-runners to claim a spot in Australia's squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies.
Short, 28, is "excited" and feels honoured to be given the responsibility.
"Adelaide and the Strikers has been my summer home for five years now, I love the city and the club so to be named captain of the Strikers is a real honour. I really enjoyed the little taste of captaincy I got last season and I’m excited to put my full attention to it in BBL|13.
"I think we’ve got a really great list this season and I can’t wait to see what we can do together, starting on Saturday night in front of our home fans," Short said.
Head Coach of Strikers, Jason Gillespie mentioned that the team management was fairly impressed with Short as a leader in the previous edition and hence he was the "standout choice" as the leader.
"Matt was a standout choice to take on the captaincy at the Adelaide Strikers and we are thrilled to announce him as our sixth captain. When he stepped up last year we were very impressed with his leadership and we are looking forward to seeing him grow further into the role," Gillespie said.
