Pallekele, Sri Lanka, Sept 12: The second test between Sri Lanka and Australia ended in a draw on Monday after rain washed out more than a session on the final day, frustrating the tourists' hopes of wrapping up the three-match series.

Sri Lanka reached 317-6 -- a lead of 80 runs in the second innings—when rain interrupted play during the second session. No more play was possible.

A total of 136 overs were lost in the match because of rain and early stoppages due to bad light. Seamer Ryan Harris had best figures of 3-54 for Australia.

Australia leads the series 1-0, with the third game to be played in Colombo starting Friday.

The Australians made good use of the new ball that was due just one over into the final day, on a pitch that offers early help for swing bowling.

Harris struck in the fourth over when he had Kumar Sangakkara caught at slip by captain Michael Clarke for his overnight score of 69. The dismissal ended a gritty 101-run partnership for the third wicket between Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Sangakkara faced 165 balls and hit eight boundaries.

Clarke also caught Jayawardene, taking him at slip off Copeland for 51 off 133 balls, which included five fours.

Jayawardene was one of three Sri Lankan batsmen to score half-centuries in the second innings. AP
