Former India batsmen VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag on Tuesday expressed their grief over the death of DMK stalwart and five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi, a doyen of Tamil Nadu and Indian politics, died on Tuesday evening at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. He was 94.
"I convey my deepest condolences to family members and admirers of #Karunanidhi ji on his demise. RIP," Laxman tweeted.
"Condolences to the family and supporters of #Karunanidhi ji. May everyone maintain peace in Tamil Nadu," Sehwag wrote on Twitter.
Sports Minister of India, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore took to Twitter to share his condolances.
Karunanidhi was shifted to the hospital on July 28 from his Gopalapuram residence following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since and his condition worsened on Monday.
"With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi at 6.20 p.m. Despite the best possible efforts by a team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond," a hospital statement said.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed grief over his death, saying the country is poorer today.
"Extremely sad to learn of the passing away of M. Karunanidhi. A doyen of our public life, as a contributor to the development of Tamil Nadu and of India, he has few peers. Our country is poorer today. My condolences to his family and millions of well-wishers," Kovind tweeted.
