Mahendra Singh Dhoni not only overshadowed Virat Kohli's power-packed innings with his inspiring finishing skills but also surpassed the Indian skipper in the record books during the second ODI against Australia in Adelaide.
The former Indian skipper pipped the current one in the tally of highest batting average while chasing in winning causes (minimum 1000 runs).
Kohli has an outstanding batting average of 99.05 while chasing in winning causes. However, Dhoni - with his fiery unbeaten 55 - took his batting average to 99.85.
Dhoni's knock helped India get past the finishing line against Australia on Tuesday to draw level in the three-match ODI series. The last match will be played in Melbourne on Friday.
In many instances, Dhoni and Kohli have been solely responsible for bringing India many historic victories in the past few years and the duo are one of the most iconic pairs in cricket history.
There are many similarities between the two star players when it comes their captaincy skills, destructive finishing skills and the ability to bring India home.
In 80 matches, Kohli has scored 21 centuries and 19 half centuries in successful run chases with 4853 runs in his kitty while the 37-year old veteran has only two centuries and 18 half centuries while doing the same in 111 matches with 2696 runs.
Dhoni, who has been struggling with his form for quite a while now has bounced back in style by hitting two back to back fifties in the ongoing ODI series.
While his 51-run innings in first ODI was bit slow, he reinvented himself in the Adelaide ODI and took the team to the victory line.
Skipper Kohli also praised his ace player Dhoni after his match-winning knock.
"There is no doubt that he should be a part of this team. Tonight was MS classic. He calculates the game so well. He takes the game till the end, when only he knows what's going on in his mind, and he backs himself to hit those big shots at the end," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
