The Sri Lankan team got a major setback with off-spinner Akila Dananjaya getting suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.
Dananjaya was reported with a suspect bowling action during the first Test against England, which the visitors won by 211 runs in Galle and had undergone an independent assessment of his bowling action on 23 November 2018 at the National Cricket Centre, Brisbane.
It was found that his action exceeded the 15-degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.
The 25-year-old was reported with a suspect bowling action during the first Test against England, which the visitors won by 211 runs in Galle. Sri Lanka were whitewashed 3-0 in the series.
"The International Cricket Council today announced that an independent assessment has found the bowling action of Sri Lanka's off-spinner Akila Dananjaya to be illegal and, as such he has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement.
"Dananjaya can apply for a re-assessment after modifying his bowling action in accordance with clause 4.5 of the Regulations," the ICC added.
Dananjaya can play domestic cricket by getting permission from Sri Lanka Cricket Board.
It is surely a big blow to the Lankan team as the off-spinner has been one of the leading wicket-takers for the team this year.
Dananjaya has played five Test matches till now and picked 27 wickets at an average of 24.25. In One-Day Internationals, he has 46 scalps under his belt in 30 matches.
