Sri Lanka's cricket board has relieved Angelo Mathews of his captaincy role after their humiliating exit from the ongoing Asia Cup tournament and have appointed Dinesh Chandimal as the new ODI skipper ahead of the England tour.
Chandimal, who was already Sri Lanka's Test skipper, will now lead the nation in all three formats of the game.
Sri Lanka suffered a humiliating exit from the Asia Cup as they were ousted in the group stage itself, as they were beaten by Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
"The National Selectors on Sunday ( 23rd September, 2018) decided to appoint Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain to lead the team in the upcoming England series," Sri Lanka cricket's stated.
"Accordingly, they have requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect."
Sri Lanka have now lost 30 of their 40 matches they have played since January 2017. Their recent loss came against Afghanistan, where they succumbed to a 91-run defeat against minnows Afghanistan.
In the same tournament, Bangladesh also handed them a massive 137-run defeat in the group stage.
England are slated to play five ODIs, a one-off T20I and three Tests against Sri Lanka. The tour will commence from October 10.
