Former cricketer Virender Sehwag today reacted sharply on the recent reports of the harassment meted out to women revellers on New Year ’s eve in Bengaluru that has left the entire country ashamed.
In a comment aimed at those who held women responsible for the incident, Sehwag said that “someone's Dress is not a Yes.” Expressing disappointment on the reports of mass molestation in one of India’s most hi-tech cities, the legendry cricketer said “such incidents need to stop.”
While showing his resentment on the issue, Sehwag wrote that he was "extremely disappointed and hurt" by the incident despite the deployment of around 1,500 police officials on MG Road and Brigade Road.
The incident triggered an outrage in the country which was only escalated by comments like those of Karnataka Home minister G Parameshwara who said that “these kinds of things do happen”.
“They tried to copy the westerners, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing. So some disturbance, some girls are harassed, these kinds of things do happen,” he had said.
The remarks by the minister sparked huge uproar, with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju condemning Parameshwara for his remarks and sought immediate action against the culprits.
“I condemn the irresponsible comment made by Karnataka Home Minister. We can’t allow the shameful act of mass molestation go unpunished. Bengaluru is a vibrant city and women’s safety is must in a civilised society,” Rijiju tweeted.
On the other hand, the police, shockingly said that there has been no official cases of molestation and harassment registered with them despite several eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence.
The deadline for celebrations this New Year was extended till 2 am this year, under pressure from some of the commercial establishments, especially the drinking joints in the central division.
