What an outstanding performance by Bangladesh! They will be mighty pleased with where they stand in the game at the moment. After being inserted, ti was their openers who set the tone for them as they got the Bangla Tigers off to a flier. The two fell in quick succession but then the experienced heads of Rahim and Shakib added a massive 142-run stand and that laid the foundation for a big score. Both got to their fifties. 16.39 IST: Aiden Markram to Mushfiqur Rahim, FOUR! Mushfiqur steps out this time, and drives it. Lofts and clears the field.
16.36 IST: Imran Tahir to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR! Thick edge! The ball races past the slip.
16.31 IST: Imran Tahir to Mushfiqur Rahim, FOUR! Oh, dear! That is poor from Morris. Tossed up on middle, Rahim plays the sweep. It goes towards Morris at short fine leg but Morris lets it go through him and the ball races away to the fence.
16.29 IST: Aiden Markram to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR! Pierces the gap nicely! Shortish and just outside off, Shakib waits for the ball to come to him and then cuts it past the diving point fielder for a boundary.
*Imran Tahir on for South Africa now
16.23 IST: Aiden Markram to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR! Cut and cut hard! Short and wide outside off once again from Markram. Shakib this time does not miss out on it and cuts it through backward point for a boundary.
16.17 IST: Chris Morris to Shakib Al Hasan, SIX! Not the most convincing ways to get the first six of the game but they will take it.
16.13 IST: DRINKS! South Africa have come back well into the game after the Bangladesh openers were off to a flier. However, two quick wickets have pulled things back and now South Africa are looking to choke the runs. Bangladesh's most reliable players are playing out there and they would hope the two continue. South Africa on the other hand, will know they need to get the two as quickly as possible.
16.01 IST: Chris Morris to Mushfiqur Rahim, FOUR!
*Mushfiqur Rahim is the new man in
15.55 IST: Chris Morris to Soumya Sarkar, OUT! In the air... taken! Good catch by Quinton de Kock. Once again, the change of bowling works for South Africa. Morris makes an impact straightaway after being brought into the XI. A good short ball and it is very well-directed. Sarkar looks to pull but the ball hurries onto him. It hits the glove and lobs behind towards the keeper. De Kock runs in, dives forward and takes it brilliantly. Sarkar trudges off slowly after getting a start. Both the openers now back in the hut. South Africa back in the game.
*Chris Morris replaces Kagiso Rabada.
15.50 IST: Andile Phehlukwayo to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Brilliant push towards sweeper cover.
15.49 IST: UMPIRE'S CALL! It's clipping the stumps! Harsh on Phehlukwayo who looked so confident here. However, South Africa doesn't lose the review.
15.48 IST: Andile Phehlukwayo to Soumya Sarkar, BIG LBW APPEAL! Faf du Plessis has called for review.
15.45 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR! Stands and delivers. Back of the length and outside off, Shakib hits it towards the point.
Update on Hashim Amla:
*Surprise! Shakib Al Hasan walks in at number 3.
15.39 IST: Andile Phehlukwayo to Tamim Iqbal, OUT! Moves way from the left-hander and Iqbal couldn't resist. Easy catch for De Kock.
15.36 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! It's full, and it's on the off. Sarkar punches it towards the covers.
15.35 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Now that's clever. Sarkar almost lets the ball kiss the ball as he opens the willow's face.
15.32 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR! Smashed it brilliantly. Pulled it towards the midwicket. Poor over from Ngidi, who is clearly frustrated.
*This is the first World Cup game where the side playing the first innings hasn't lost a wicket in the first-5 overs. So far, so good.
15.29 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Slightly full, and Sarkar plays a simple shot towards long-off. Fielder gives the chase but the timing is too good.
15.28 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Another edge, but this time, it was a bit too wide for the second slip to even stop the ball, let alone catch it.
15.25 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR! A glorious cover-drive from Iqbal. Bad line from Rabada.
15.24 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR WIDES! Too short from Rabada and Quinton de Kock couldn't catch it, even with a gigantic leap. Good start for Bangladesh here.
15.22 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Edged and goes past the slip! Sarkar was lucky here.
15.21 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Ctrl C + Ctrl V, that. Another short ball, another pull from Sarkar! Ngidi needs to change his length here.
15.20 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Soumya Sarkar, FOUR! Short this time from Ngidi, and Sarkar pulls it. A magnificent shot!
Will we see the legendary celebration today again?
15.15 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Soumya Sarkar, two runs! Slightly full and Tamim wanted to go for a drive, but mistimes it. The ball instead takes the inside edge and runs towards the midwicket.
15.13 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Tamim Iqbal, beats him! The bowler has clearly learnt from his poor start against England. Keeping it on the good length and trying to get the batsman to take risks.
15.04 IST: Lungi Ngidi to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR! Sarkar is off the mark in style! He looks to have come out with an attacking approach as all the three shots he has played, he has played with intensity. Short and on middle, Sarkar plays the pick up shot over square leg and the ball races away.
15.00 IST: Done and dusted with national anthems. South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis is having a talk with his team in the huddle before they take their respective position in the field. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar walk out to open the batting for Bangladesh. Lungi Ngidi has the ball for the Proteas.
14.54 IST: Out walk the two set of players for their respective national anthems. First up, it will be Bangladesh's national anthem followed by South Africa's. We aren't far away from the start.
14.40 IST: Playing XIs:
South Africa: Quinton de Kock (WK), Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Jean-Paul Duminy, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mashrafe Mortaza (C), Mehidy Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman
14.37 IST: Mashrafe Mortaza: We are confident, had a good preparation. South Africa losing that day doesn't matter. We have to play hard. It's a good wicket to bat on. Tamim is playing. Everyone is fit to play. Our top XI are playing.
Faf du Plessis: We'll have a bowl. Playing an extra seamer today, and we would like to attack the Bangladeshis in the first 15 overs. We did really well to restrict the strong England line-up to 300ish, and we were one partnership away from a really close chase. Amla's out, so Miller comes back in. Morris comes in as well, as I said we are trying to take advantage of the bounce on the wicket.
14.33 IST: TOSS - Faf du Plessis has won the toss and South Africa will bowl first
SA vs BAN, 2019 World Cup Match 5 in London: BAN (0/0) vs SA at The Oval
Brief Preview: Bangladesh will be facing a bruised South African side in their World Cup opener on Sunday at The Oval in London. The Proteas were condemned to a 104-run defeat largely due to England's ability to use the conditions better and the combined brilliance of Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes. While they could do little about the latter, South Africa will have learnt more about using the conditions which only makes Bangladesh's task all the more difficult. Even in that defeat, South Africa showed that they have the resources to justify their tag as one of the favourites behind England, India and Australia. [Read full preview]
