The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is the major cricket stadium in Hyderabad is home to Hyderabad Cricket Association and Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. The stadium was opened in 2004 and has a capacity of close to 60,000. The stadium was proposed by HCA after it had limited access to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, which belonged to the Sport Authority of Telangana State. The proposal was accepted by the then chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu. The stadium was built by Visaka Industries Ltd after it won the bid with an amount of Rs 65,00,00,000. Later on, it was decided that the stadium will be named after former India Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium hosted its first match in 2005 - an ODI match between India and South Africa. It is spread across 16 acres and has six towers of flood lights. The pitch is considered as a good batting track with assistance to spinners.
