While India outclassed West Indies on their home turf winning the four-Test match series 2-0 on Tuesday, star off-spinner Ravichandran Ahwin also achieved a remarkable feat.
Ashwin surpassed batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and run-machine Virender Sehwag in terms of getting maximum Man of the Series awards. And surprisingly, he claimed these six in just his 13 Test series.
Ashwin has now become the top Indian player to claim maximum number of Man of Series awards. Earlier, Sachin and Sehwag held the record jointly with 5 awards each.
The 29-year-old Ashwin was named Player of the Series for India’s dominating 2-0 win over West Indies in the rain-curtailed series. He bagged 17 wickets in seven innings with a best of 7 for 83 runs.
Ashwin also smashed 235 runs at an excellent average of 58.75 that included two centuries.
Sehwag took to Twitter to congratulate India’s star all-rounder for his terrific performance.
Another surprising fact is that it just took 36 Test matches for Ashwin to reach the accomplishment, whereas Sachin has played 200 Test matches and Sehwag has played 104 matches.
Sri-Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan leads the chart with a total of 11 Man of the Series awards. He is followed by South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis with nine awards and Pakistan’s Imran Khan, New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee and Australia’s Shane Warne with eight awards each.
On the other hand, Ashwin has been awarded Man of the Match six times, while Tendulkar leads the chart with as many as 14 awards. However, Ashwin has done this in just 37 Test matches.
