South Africa vs India, 2019 World Cup Match 8:A smooth sail in the end for India as they cruise to a convincing win in their tournament opener! Chasing a target of 228 runs, they did lose Dhawan and Kohli quite cheaply but Rohit Sharma held one end strongly and stitched an 85-run stand with KL Rahul. South Africa managed to break that partnership and got an opening but MS Dhoni walked in and threaded yet another useful stand with Sharma to put this chase to bed. It turned out to be a really good game for Rohit, who after getting a life on 1, went on to stroke an unbeaten century. Scorecard | When and where to watch)

However, his partnership with Rohit Sharma has taken India to the brink of victory. South Africa on the other hand, finally hang onto one. Morris bowls the slower one on middle, Dhoni looks to go big but is done in by the pace. IND 213/4 in 46.1 overs

* Slight disturbance near the sightscreen. There is someone trying to hide behind the advertising boards. But his head is still visible. Dhoni points that out before getting ready to take strike.

22.18 IST: Shamsi to Dhoni, FOUR! Not from the middle of the bat but there is no protection in the deep on the off side and it has trickled past the rope. Shamsi is on the shorter side and Dhoni has slapped it through the line. IND 183/3 in 42.2 overs
22.14 IST: Tabraiz Shamsi to MS Dhoni, Dropped by Markram (sub)! A late cut shot played by Dhoni goes closely towards first slip. Aiden reacts to his right but it brushes his hand and rolls towards point. MS gets a life!
22.13 IST: Tabraiz Shamsi to Rohit Sharma, 23rd ODI hundred for Rohit Sharma! He reaches there by using his wrists to play the flick shot. Once it beats the diving mid-wicket fielder, he crosses for a run. His teammates stand and applaud on the balcony. The crowd is making a lot of noise as well. The Hitman has arrived at the World Cup. Take a bow, Rohit Sharma. Even though it was not a tough chase, the Indian opener has endured the initial onslaught and from there on, has moved from strength to strength. The speciality of this innings has been how calm he has been even though he has played and missed a few. Just showed the composure that he needed. Time for him to see off the final phase as well.
22.06 IST: Chris Morris to MS Dhoni, Extra bounce and movement! Morris has extracted that quite a few times from this track. This one nips back in from a good length and pings Dhoni on his thigh pad. It rolls towards point and there is a confusion over a run. Not taken in the end.

21.51 IST: Phehlukwayo to Rohit, FOUR! Smashed down the ground! Rohit is on 94! Slapped down the ground! 21.34 IST: Imran Tahir to Rohit Sharma, Comedy in the middle of the pitch! Rohit flicks a full delivery towards square leg and Dhoni sets off for a run. The Indian keeper-batsman then hesitates but Rohit wants a single after seeing the misfield. MS is late in realizing that and eventually runs for the single
* Drinks break. India have the upper hand in this chase mainly due to the knock of Rohit Sharma and his partnership with KL Rahul. A wicket has just fallen but one would like to believe that India have enough firepower in their batting to get the remaining runs. MS Dhoni has arrived in the middle to partner Sharma.
21.26 IST: Kagiso Rabada to KL Rahul, OUT! Rabada strikes to remove Rahul. The 85-run stand has been broken. Can South Africa still believe? They have another 89 runs to play with. A fuller length ball around off, speared in at 137 kph, it probably holds up a bit after landing and Rahul is early into his shot. 21.12 IST: Kagiso Rabada to Rohit Sharma, Beaten comprehensively! You are never in against this bowler, doesn't matter how many runs you have scored in the innings. Rabada dishes out a shortish length ball outside off and gets it to nip back in. Rohit tamely pushes inside the line and it sneaks past the inside half of his bat.
* Kagiso Rabada returns into the attack. The last throw of the dice for South Africa. They need a breakthrough immediately here.
21.08 IST: Tabraiz Shamsi to Rohit Sharma, FOUR! Lovely touch! Waited and waited and got plenty of bat on his square cut. Good awareness from Sharma. 20.27 IST: Andile Phehlukwayo to Rohit Sharma, Length and on off, Rohit taps it towards point. Rahul wants a run but is sent back in time.
* Drinks break. Going has been tough for India but they are hanging in there. Rohit Sharma survived the early moments and has settled down now. He holds the key for the Men in Blue in this chase with Virat Kohli already back in the pavilion. 166 needed still off 198 balls. The asking rate is not an issue and the Indian middle order just need to concentrate on building partnerships.

19.10 IST: Imran Tahir to Shikhar Dhawan, Starts with a flatter and shorter ball on middle, Dhawan goes on the back foot and punches it towards mid-wicket.
* The pitch is quite spicy. It's having some extra bounce and movement and South Africa also have a good pace attack, although they will feel the absence of Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn (who was earlier supposed to play this game but pulled out of the tournament last evening). Also, they have the same variety in the spin department as India but whether the likes of Tahir and Shamsi will have the same impact on the Indian batsmen remains to be seen. Do join us in a short while for the chase.
