David Warner returned to the Indian Premier League with a bang on Sunday and he revealed that it was not a cakewalk for the Australian against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Normally a bunny of a team for the Australian, return to the big-stage was always going to be nerve-wracking and after a successful comeback into the Sunrisers set up, he revealed that he was nervous and the elbow wasn't an issue for him.
"I was a bit nervous in the dressing room and kept drinking pickle juice. The elbow injury wasn't all too bad and I've done a lot of work back home with my trainer," Warner said at the post-innings interview.
Warner smashed his 37th IPL fifty before finishing on 85 off 35 balls and according to him, it felt good to be back in the mix and contribute.
"It is good to get out there and contribute. It looked a nice wicket to bat on but it slowed down a bit which made us reassess after six overs," Warner said.
Riding on Warner's 85, Sunrisers posted 181/3 from their 20 overs and the 32-year-old feels that if his team can restrict KKR in the first six overs, they can defend the total and win the first game.
"The ball comes on nicely under lights here and hopefully we can keep the ball new for the first six overs. When you've got the momentum and you haven't lost a wicket it is easy to free your arms and go after the spinners.
"But when you lose a wicket you have to reassess, but they came back well at the end," Warner said.
Warner, who was banned for a year for his role in the ball-tampering scandal by Cricket Australia and then by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), returned to IPL after a gap of 12 months and showed why he is such a dangerous player.
The Australian looked at ease as he scored the first fifty of IPL 2019.
The southpaw brought up his fifty in the ninth over with six over third man off Andre Russell and then went on from strength to strength.
The former Hyderabad captain finally fell for 85 in the 16th over to Andre Russell, when he handed a catch to Robin Uthappa at covers. Warner took 53 balls for his 85 and smashed nine fours and three sixes in his innings.
