After enthralling the fans world over in the past 10 years, Indian Premier League is all set to witness an overhaul in the upcoming season of the world biggest cricketing extravaganza. For the first time ever the 'Player Retention' event will be taking place in the history of the cash-rich tournament. The 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to be a huge event with almost every player going under the auction hammer. The return of two popular franchises – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are likely to add more star value to the cricketing fest.
Before the much-hyped Player Auction which will be taking place on January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru, the franchisees have been given an opportunity to retain a core of their previous squad members through an official retention event. The franchises can either retain a player or use the Right to Match(RTM) card to buy the player during the auction. All other remaining players would head into the auction to know about their own fates. The limit of retaining players, from both the player retention event and the auction event combined, is five.
If the reports are to be believed - the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, David Warner and Steven Smith are on the top of the priority list of their respective franchises. Even if teams do not want to retain any player on Thursday, they have the option to use the RTM card for five players on auction day.
Star India bagged the IPL media rights last September for a period of 5 years, from 2018 to 2022. The sports media giant paid a whopping Rs 16,347.50 crore, to bag the broadcasting rights beating former IPL broadcasters Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI).
