Dhoni took three catches against Punjab on Sunday, taking his tally to 144 and overtaking Kumar Sangakkara's record of 142 catches.
Dhoni reached the landmark in his 291st T20 game while it took 264 matches for Sangakkara to set the record.
Others in the list of top five are Dinesh Karthik (139), Kamran Akmal (123) and Denesh Ramdin (111).
Not only this, Dhoni now also holds the record of most dismissals in T20 cricket, surpassing Pakistan's Kamran Akmal.
Dhoni has 216 dismissals to his name, while Kamran Akmal has 215. Sangakkara (202), Karthik (192) and Ramdin (155) are others on the list.
Meanwhile, Dhoni - who struck 16 off 7 balls - also became the 7th batsman to register 4000 runs in IPL. Dhoni now has 4007 runs to his name. The list is headed by Virat Kohli (4948), Rohit Sharma (4493), Gautam Gambhir (4217) and Robin Uthappa (4081).
Chennai will take on Hyderabad in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday with the winner going through to the final on Sunday.
