Ahead of final and crucial Test match against Australia in Dharamsala, Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer was on Thursday called up as a cover for injured Indian captain Virat Kohli.
The skipper had injured his shoulder on Day 1 of the third Test match against Australia in Ranchi when he was trying to chase down a ball racing to the boundary.
He, however, came back to bat during Indian innings. The match ended in draw.
Many have cast doubt over his fitness and have expressed suspicion if he would be able to play in Dharamsala on Saturday.
Former Australian skipper Michael Clarke has said that Virat Kohli's injury is "a lot worse than people know."
Iyer is a right-handed batsman and plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket. He is yet to make his debut in international cricket.
India and Australia are tied up at 1-1 in four match series.
