India vs West Indies, Highlights, First Test Day 2 at Rajkot:
India vs West Indies, 1st Test, Day 2: Forgettable couple of days for the visiting side. First, they were pummeled mercilessly with the bat and then, have been almost skittled out in not even half the time. The players look fagged out under the heat and have simply not turned up. The opening batsmen were clueless against the guile of Shami while the middle order were consumed by spin. Then of course, some generosity was produced as well in a run out and a wild shot. Overall, nothing much to describe in the tourists' batting, except for Roston Chase, who has shown the gumption to survive. Is this Indian attack the best in the world? No Bhuvi. No Bumrah. No Hardik. Yet they have piled on the pressure on the opposition. Agreed, the Windies are not that technically sound but this is a terrific team bowling effort. First, you need to see the new balls off in Shami or Bumrah or Bhuvi. Then, you encounter the spin of Ashwin or Jadeja or Kuldeep. The main bowlers did well in England. And here, the bench has strutted its stuff. (IND v WI 1st TEST SCORECARD)HIGHLIGHTS, India vs West Indies, 1st Test, Day 2 Live from Rajkot:
16.38 IST: West Indies 94/6 at stumps, trail India (649/9d) by 555 runs in Rajkot. Shami 2/11, Jadeja 1/9, Chase 27*. Mohammed Shami to Roston Chase, no run. The reverse on offer again. Full on off, coming in a long way, Chase just about keeps it out towards mid-wicket. STUMPS ON DAY 2, WINDIES TRAIL BY 555!
16.33 IST: Mohammed Shami to bowl the final over of the day.
16.31 IST: FOUR! Full and around off, Paul gets down on a knee and sweeps it powerfully through square leg for a boundary!
16.30 IST: SIX! SLAM! Full and outside off, Paul comes down the track and sends the ball over long on! Does not matter to Paul even if there are just 2 overs to the close.
16.28 IST: FOUR! A bit of reverse coming in and Shami gets too greedy. Bowls a length ball on the pads and is flicked towards square leg.
16.22 IST: Into the bowlers now. Keemo Paul is the first of them.
16.21 IST: OUT! Kuldeep removes Dowrich for 10. Right through! Kuldeep is amongst the wickets as well. Tossed up around off and outside, Dowrich looks to push it through the off side but is done in by the flight and pace. He misses and the ball spins right in, hitting the timber. This is similar to the way Kuldeep dismissed Peter Handscomb from Australia in the Dharamsala Test. West Indies 74/6, trail India (649/9d) by 575 runs in Rajkot.
16.15 IST: FOUR! A wild slog. Full and outside off, Chase gets down and heaves it over mid-wicket for a boundary. That was not from the middle of the bat.
16.07 IST: FOUR! Nicely timed. Full and outside off, Chase jumps out and hits this straight back over the bowler for a boundary down the ground. The stand moves to 12 now.
16.05 IST: FOUR! A rare bad ball. Short and outside off, Dowrich goes back and cuts it between cover and point to find the fence.
15.54 IST: Shane Dowrich walks in at number 7, replacing Ambris.
15.53 IST: Day 2: OUT! Jadeja removes Ambris for 12. Strikes first ball! The magic of 'Sir' on display straightaway. Full and outside off, Ambris looks to drive it forcefully through the off side but he is not quite to the pitch of the ball. It spins away, takes the outside edge and Ajinkya Rahane at first slip takes a sharp catch. From Ambris' point of view, well, his policy might have been to attack Jadeja from the word go. But he could have waited a couple of balls and then tried his ploy. Half the side is back in just 16 overs. West Indies 49/5, trail India (649/9d) by 600 runs in Rajkot.
15.51 IST: Here comes 'Sir' Ravindra Jadeja.
15.47 IST: FOUR! PUMMELED! Full and outside off, Chase comes down the track and swipes it over mid-wicket. The ball just bounces in front of the ropes.
15.42 IST: DRINKS BREAK. Terrorizing passage of play for the visiting side. They were not able to get much wickets when India were batting and now, they are not able to get any runs. They are not even close to face pace or spin. With 15 overs left in the day, all they can hope now is to try and see those out without any more damage. All the best.
15.37 IST: FOUR BYES! That has missed everyone and everything. Full and outside off, Chase stays back to defend but the ball snakes off the pitch, beats the outside edge, misses the pad and then goes over the stumps, missing the keeper as well, enroute the fine leg fence.
15.31 IST: Roston Chase walks in at number 6, replacing Hetmyer.
15.30 IST: OUT! Hetmyer run out for 10. Confusion everywhere! Oh dear... a comedy of errors. First, a short ball. Hetmyer works it towards the leg side and initially sets off. Ambris responds but then Hetmyer changes his mind. Both batsmen are within handshaking distance of each other and then go back into the batting crease. Now, Ambris is frustrated and plonks his bat at the striker's end. Amidst all this, Jadeja has still not released the throw. Seeing that, Hetmyer starts to run. Jadeja still does not throw and Ashwin has already walked away from the stumps. At the last moment, Jaddu throws and luckily for him, it hits the stumps! He smiles but Kohli is not amused. West Indies 32/4, trail India (649/9d) by 617 runs in Rajkot.
15.20 IST: OUT! Ashwin removes Hope. For a second, we felt that it was a play and a miss. It is indeed a play and a miss but the ball has missed the bat and hit the stump. Ashwin amongst the wickets now. Full and outside off, Hope comes half forward to defend but misses. The ball goes past the bat, misses his back pad as he looks to cover the line and then clips the bail over the off stump. Superb. WI 21/3 in 9.2 overs
15.14 IST: Close call! Short and outside off, Hope looks to cut but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
15.09 IST: FOUR! Straight drive by Hope to long on and Ashwin can't get to that. Fine shot again. Full and straight, Hope sends it right back to where it came from.
15.06 IST: EDGED away! No one to catch that. Why? On a length outside off, Hetmyer slashes hard and gets a thick outside edge which flies past gully to third man.
14.46 IST: OUT! Shami removes Powell for 1. Great start for India. The openers are gone and now there is immense pressure on the visitors. WI 7/2 in 4.1 overs
14.52 IST: FOUR! Beautifully played straight drive by Hope. The first boundary of the Windies innings. Full and around off, Hope drives it straight back. Bisects mid off and mid on perfectly and finds the fence. First boundary of the innings. WI 7/1 in 3.5 overs
14.49 IST: Another cracker. Shami is getting into his groove. The ball lands on a length outside off, Hope is leaving it but then that nut comes back in a long way. Just about misses the sticks.
14.45 IST: OUT! Timberrrrr! Great start for India as Shami finds the stumps to remove Braithwaite for 2. This is the Shami we all know about. Not the one who bowled the first over. He lands this on a good length outside off and skids it on. Brathwaite is not sure - whether to play from the crease or go forward. Whether the ball will move in or move out. Eventually, he decides to play back, as the ball comes in. But he is late. The cherry shoots onto his pads, misses the bat and knocks the off stump out of the ground. What a sight for any fast bowler. Brathwaite is asked to wait and as the replays are shown, Kohli is seen nervous. On the line? Anything behind? Something behind, according to the one sitting upstairs. That's what matters. WI 2/1 in 2.2 overs
14.39 IST: Brathwaite is away. Windies are away. Full and down the leg side, the skipper flicks it towards fine leg and gets off the mark. A rusty over from Shami - all over the place. Sprayed it everywhere.
14.35 IST: Openers Carlos Braithwaite and Keiron Powell come in to bat. Shami will begin India's attack. Let's get started.
* Right then! 649 is India's total. Windies need to make at least 450 or play out 60-70 overs to make India bat again. Case 2 could be a possibility but even that seems like a mountain to climb.
* The game started with Shannon Gabriel dismissing Rahul on a duck but then, it was all India. Shaw and Pujara counter-attacked with a double century stand with the latter missing out on a ton. The 18-year old got to his though. Then, Kohli and Rahane piled on more misery.
* India do not get bowled out. On a flat batting track in Rajkot, they have had 3 centurions, a 90, an 80, a 40, 2 double digits, 2 single digits and a duck. A paradise. This is their 6th highest total at home and second best, batting first in their own backyard.
14.15 IST: NOW INDIA DECLARE! Short and outside off, Shami punches it towards sweeper cover and crosses over. Kohli decides that enough is enough and calls his men back. TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN AS WELL.
14.12 IST: MAIDEN HUNDRED! Jadeja finally gets what he has been wanting a long time. Finally he gets to triple figures after threatening to do so quite a few times in the recent past. Full and outside off, Jadeja pushes it towards mid off and takes the all-important single. Takes his helmet off and leaps in the air. His first Test century, at his home ground. The Indian dressing room is on its feet.
14.02 IST: SIX! Massive! That is just massive! Jaddu! Full and outside off, Jadeja comes down the track and sends it sailing over the ropes! IND 644/9 in 146.4 overs
14.00 IST: FOUR! A gentle touch to his gloves and back to third man for a boundary. He's on 90 now, equaling his best score in Test cricket. Jadeja looks to pull but gets a touch of his glove on it and the ball races fine into the leg side for a boundary.
13.56 IST: SIX! Jaddu wants his ton! He is hammering away. This time the southpaw gets it right. He dances down the track again and swings through the line of the ball and with the spin. Timing on this is perfect as the ball sails over the long on boundary for a maximum. IND 632/9 in 144.4 overs
13.49 IST: Excellent batting. A touch short outside off, this time UY reads the pace of the ball correctly and dabs it past short third man. Three runs taken.
13.44 IST: SIX! Umesh hammers this one. Mighty heave! Full and outside off, Umesh gets down and slogs it sailing over mid-wicket!
13.43 IST: SIX! Another one by Jadeja. He smokes this tossed up delivery around off over the head of the wide long on fielder. Good stuff this from India. IND 611/8 in 141.1 overs
13.41 IST: SIX! That is massive! Jadeja is just hammering away. No Mercy! 600 up for India as well.
Full and outside off, Jadeja dances out and sends it sailing over long off! Flat hit. IND 604/8 in 140.5 overs
13.39 IST: FOUR! Ends the over with a boundary. India are sailing away. Very full delivery on middle and off, RJ gets forward and flicks it with perfect timing through the mid-wicket region for a boundary to end the over. IND 597/8 in 140 overs
13.37 IST: SIX! Wow! Umesh doesn't mind having a crack at it as well. IND 592/8 in 139.1 overs
13.34 IST: SIX! Smashed all the way and that's Jadeja for you. RJ charges down the track and with a full swing of the bat gets it over the wide long on fence for a superb maximum. Jadeja seems to have changes gears and this will be interesting now.
13.32 IST: FIFTY! Jadeja goes back on this ball outside off and opens his bat face at the last moment to run it down to the third man region and gets a brace for it. His 50 comes up with this shot and the famous sword celebration comes out. The crowd seems to like this from their city boy. India 575/8 in 137.3 overs
13.25 IST: OUT! Bishoo gets another. He lands this on outside off and gets it to spin into Kuldeep sharply. Yadav looking to defend it off the back foot misses it and gets rapped right in front of the off stump. An appeal from Bishoo and the umpire raises his finger.
13.21 IST: FOUR! Super sweep! Kuldeep Yadav kneels to this full ball in line with the stumps, the connection is magnificent as the ball races across the deep square leg boundary. India need more of these.
13.10 IST: Yadav goes for the sweep to this fuller delivery on off, he gets a top edge but the ball falls short of the man at deep backward square leg and the batsmen cross over for a single.
13.05 IST: Huge appeal for LBW, turned down. That looked close. Full and around off, Kuldeep looked to defend but then missed and was hit on the pads. Why wasn't that out? Ahh.... replays show an inside edge. Just last week my wife was telling me to check the power in my eyes. Should have listened to her and paid a visit. Age is catching up...
13.00 IST: FOUR! Edged and safe. Just fingertips away from the keeper. Paul is unlucky here as he lands this good length delivery just outside off, Jadeka looks to push at it away from his body, gets an outside edge which flies past the diving keeper for a boundary. Cannot call it a drop catch, it was a bit too wide for Dowrich to pouch it. IND 553/7 in 129.2 overs
12.54 IST: OUT! Bishoo gets his third and removes Ashwin for 7. Matters can only turn interesting from here on. A cracking delivery this from the leggie. Bishoo keeps it just shorter of full length on off, Ashwin goes back to keep it out but gets a faint outside edge, Dowrich behinds takes a good catch. Is the declaration coming soon now? IND 545/7 in 128.1 overs
12.44 IST: FOUR! Sliced for a boundary. lands this very full and way outside off, the right-hander reaches out for the ball and ends up squirting it past the diving gully fielder, the ball races through the fence at the deep point region. IND 542/6 in 125.5 overs
12.40 IST: Tossed up delivery on middle and leg, Ashwin stays leg side off the ball and plays an inside-out drives past the diving man at covers to get off strike.
* Ravichandran Ashwin is out to bat.
12.34 IST: OUT! Lewis removes Kohli for 139. The skipper departs. Against the run of play, pretty much like his other teammates. A length ball outside off, Kohli looks to work it through the off side but the ball sticks in the pitch. Similar to how Shaw got out. As a result, an edge is induced which lobs towards mid on.Plenty of Windies players get across to congratulate the Indian captain, perhaps hoping that India will declare. But... IND 534/6 in 123.4 overs
12.32 IST: FOUR! Edged goes for a boundary. First boundary for Jadeja! Full and outside off, Jadeja pushes at it but gets a thick outside edge which goes wide of first slip to the third man fence. IND 533/5 in 123.2 overs
12.30 IST: FOUR! Another one and in the exact same area. So good to the eyes. A very full delivery this on middle and leg, Kohli flicks this through mid-wicket, the timing on it is simply amazing and the ball races across the mid-wicket fence. Fantastic batting by the Indian captain. IND 529/5 in 123 overs
12.30 IST: FOUR! Slog swept away for a boundary. He gets down on the flighted delivery on off and slog sweeps it brilliantly through mid-wicket for a boundary. Looking to up the ante now. IND 524/5 in 122.5 overs
12.16 IST: FOUR! Beautifully played by the skipper. First ball after Lunch to Kohli and he shows his class straigh away. Drives a good length ball on off straight down the ground between the bowler and mid off for a lovely boundary. What a start for the Indian skipper! Needs to score some quick runs here. IND 511/5 in 119.2 overs
12.10 IST: Welcome back for the second session. The umpires and the West Indies players make their way out. Kohli and Jadeja also stride out to the middle with the southpaw on strike. Let's play...\
DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
11.50 IST: What next now? When will India declare? An hour post the break? Or after Tea? Kohli and Jadeja might just look to press the accelerator post Lunch. Actually, given the way the Windies are bowling, the Indians need not do anything fancy. Runs are coming quite easily.
11.40 IST: 142 runs, 29 overs, 1 wicket. Another passage of play dominated by the hosts. Pant has been the only loss, that too, perhaps due to a rush of blood. Many players love to get to milestones with a biggie and he seemed to get consumed by that.
11.30 IST: Played through mid-wicket by the Indian captain. The Umpire takes the bails off and THAT'S LUNCH.
11.24 IST: 500 up for India.
11.18 IST: Dropped! Kohli gets a life. A flighted delivery on off, the Indian captain looks to blast it straight down the ground, Bishoo hangs his left hand out to catch it but cannot grab it as the ball gets deflected into the mid off region.
11.10 IST: Jaddu prods forward looking to defend, gets a thick outside edge through short third man for a brace.
11.00 IST: OUT! Bishoo removes Pant for 92. No century for Pant! Sad moment for his fans and himself too. He was in the mood to swing and did not try to curb it. Came down the track perhaps a bit too much in advance. Bishoo smartly tosses this wide outside off and Rishabh is foxed. IND 470/5 in 108.1 overs
10.50 IST: FOUR! HUNDRED FOR CAPTAIN KOHLI! No. 24 for the Indian skipper. This is his 2nd century against the Windies and his 17th as a captain. Fabulous stuff this by the Kohli. He works this ball on his pads with a faint tickle part short fine leg to get a boundary and reach to the triple figure mark. The run machine continues pile big runs.IND 463/4 in 106.1 overs
10.44 IST: FOUR! Cracking cut! Chase pulls his length back and Pant takes full toll of it. He rocks back on his back foot and fiercely cuts this through the point region for a lovely boundary. IND 451/4 104 overs
10.40 IST: SIX! We're dealing in boundaries here. Not just your average drives in Test cricket, some big massive shots, courtesy of Pant. Pant on the move now. Pants swing hard at this tossed up delivery on off and gets good elevation and power on it for the ball to fly over the wide long on boundary for a biggie. Superb batting by the southpaw. 100-run partnership comes up. IND 440/4 in 102 overs
10.38 IST: FOUR! Pant in attacking mode, this is going to be interesting. Bishoo keeps this full but on Pant's pads, the southpaw kneels down to sweep it very fine for a boundary. IND 433/4 in 102.3 overs
10.36 IST: OOPS! Nearly drags it on! Full and around off, Rishabh comes forward to defend. But then, the ball hits the bottom part of the bat and perilously rolls back onto the stumps! Good reflex action from RP to try and deflect the ball away but then he realizes that it was a bit away from the sticks.
10.35 IST: SIX! This is going, going, gone! Tossed up once again and out comes Pant once more. This time he is to the pitch of the ball. Smashes it over long off. IND 427/4 in 100.2 overs
10.34 IST: FOUR! Woah! Not quite cleanly hit but effective. Full on off, Pant dances down the track, is not quite to the pitch of the ball but still goes through with his shot. It goes off the inner half but clears mid-on comfortably. IND 421/4 in 101.1 overs
* Drinks break. That's the end of the first hour of play. India have managed to 53 without losing a wicket. The Windies bowlers seem to be struggling as the batting pair is scoring quickly without taking any risks. Can we expect some fireworks after the break?
10.27 IST: SIX! MAIDEN FIFTY! We didn't expect that so fast but that is how unpredictable Pant is. Maiden fifty for this young lad as well. This comes after the brilliant century in the final Test against England. A length ball, around middle and off, Pant swivels and whips it mightily over mid-wicket! Not much of a celebration but a stern piece of instruction from Kohli. Probably trying to calm him down. Do not gift your wicket away. IND 416/4 in 100.2 overs
10.26 IST: FOUR! Edged goes past the fielder. No one is stopping that and Rishabh Pant. Streaky from Pant. Not a bad line, not a bad length, from Keemo Paul. Full and outside off, a touch wide, Pant goes for the drive but there is minimal footwork. Gets an outside edge which goes past the man at gully to the third man fence. IND 410/4 in 100.1 overs
10.15 IST: A very full ball around off, Pant tries to absolutely bludgeon it straight down the ground, the southpaw looses his shape and mistimes it to back to the bowler. Paul gets a hand to it to deflect it to mid off.
10.10 IST: 400 up for India! Pant works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
10.07 IST: Shorter of a good length ball on Pants body, the keeper tries to flick it but gets a leading edge and the ball lobs to the left of the bowler who tries to catch it with his left hand but the ball is wide enough for the southpaw to continue batting.
10.05 IST: Good ball by Lewis, he bangs this one short and gets the ball to rise onto Pant, the southpaw gets on his toes to play it down towards the gully region.
10.00 IST: FOUR! Lovely Shot! Superb batting from Rishabh Pant as he flicks this very full ball on his pads through mid-wicket to get four runs. IND 398/4 in 94.3 overs
09.58 IST: FOUR! Fabulous flick from the Indian captain, a length ball on his pads is flicked through mid-wicket for a super boundary. IND 393/4 in 94.1 overs
09.55 IST: FOUR! 50 partnership comes up as Pant instinctively pulls this Short of a good length ball angling into his body very fine to beat the fielder at fine leg and gets a boundary to end the over. IND 389/4 in 94 overs
09.55 IST: Just short of the fielder at deep square leg, Pant pulls this short ball but gets a top edge. The fielder at deep square stops it from crossing the fence. One run added.
09.46 IST: FOUR! Exquisite from the captain! One of the perfect covered drives you can see all day. So effortlessly done. He's in his 80's now. IND 381/4 in 92.2 overs
09.44 IST: A bit shorter of a good length on directed towards Pants body, the attacking keeper taps it down into the square leg region to get a quick single.
09.38 IST: Gabriel starts off with a very full length ball wide of off, Kohli looks to play at it but the ball goes under his bat and to the keeper.
09.33 IST: FOUR! Not long before Pant starts playing his shots. Flicks it down through square leg. This is the advantage of the right hand - left hand combination. Keeps it on a fuller length but strays on his pads. Pant flicks it for a boundary through square leg. IND 379/4 in 89.4 overs
09.29 IST: We are all in readiness for play to begin as the umpires and the Windies team walk out to the middle. The Indian pair of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant stride out with the skipper taking strike.
09.20 IST: West Indies, on the other hand, will be keen on breaking this partnership and enter the Indian tail at the earliest. How can the visitors stop the Indian skipper and the flamboyant keeper-batsman from taking the match away from them? Yesterday we did not see a lot of assistance for the bowlers. Will the second new ball do the trick for the tourists? We are surely in for an exciting day of Test cricket. Stay tuned...
09.15 IST: The current pair of skipper Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will look to put up a big first innings total and put the Windies batsmen under pressure. West Indies, on the other hand, will be keen on breaking this partnership and enter the Indian tail at the earliest.
08.50 IST: Kohli is currently at 72, how long will it take before he notches up his 24th Test hundred?
08.43 IST: We can expect fireworks with Rishabh Pant around and there is still enough batting left for the home team to push their total in excess of 500.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Day 2 of the 1st Test between India and West Indies. Play will resume from 9.30 AM IST.
