New Delhi: India’s first ever pink ball cricket match will be hosted this month at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
According to a report in The Indian Express on Tuesday, Sourav Ganguly, president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), said that the final of the Super League, featuring top eight teams in local cricket, will be played with a pink Kookaburra ball under lights from June 17-20.
"Pink-ball cricket indeed is the way forward. Test cricket's popularity has been steadily declining and we must do something to arrest the slide. The pink-ball Test in Australia last year received an overwhelmingly positive response and we must embrace the change. The Super League final under lights is an experiment with an eye to hosting day-night Tests in the near future. I think it would be a very good experience," Sourav told The Indian Express.
The Ganguly-headed Technical Committee which met in Bengaluru last month said that all matches of the Duleep Trophy tournament would be played with pink Kookaburra balls.
It also stated that they are into talks with other sports goods firms to manufacture pink balls for day-night games.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) had also said that it was receptive to the idea of playing a day-night Test match in India if the trial of the pink ball turns happened to be successful.
