Ind vs Eng, 2nd ODI: India beat England by 15 runs to take unassailable 2-0 lead

Riding on spectacular performances by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, India on Thursday finished with 381 in the second One-Day International against England here.

India beat Engalnd by 15 runs in the second One-day International (ODI) at Barabati stadium here on Thursday to seize the three-match series 2-0. 

Chasing a mammoth target of 382 runs, English batsman could only reach 366 at the end of 50 overs. 

Captain Eoin Morgan top scored with 102 runs off 81 balls but could not take his team home as he was run out in the 49th over by Jaspit Bumrah. 

Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets for 65 in his quota of 10 overs. 

Earlier in the first inning, riding on spectacular performances by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, India finished with 381/6. 

The duo added 256 runs between them in 38.2 overs to bring the Indian innings back on track after England pacer Chris Woakes had reduced the hosts to 25/3 by the fifth over.

Put to bat first after losing the toss, India had a jittery start as it lost three wickets with just 25 runs on the scoreboard.

K L Rahul (5 off 5 balls), Shikhar Dhawan (11 runs from 15 balls) and Virat Kohli (8 runs from 5 balls) were dismissed by Chris Woakes.

Yuvraj Singh, who made a comeback to national team with the ODI series against England, came to the rescue with his career-best ODI innings and scored a prolific century which came off 98 balls.

He finished at 150 with three sixes and 21 fours in 127 ball innings after being caught behind by Jos Buttler off Chris Woakes. Yuvraj, who surpassed his best score of 139 runs, slammed his first ODI century in six years, the last coming way back in 2011 during the World Cup.

He also became the highest Indian run-getter against England surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record. He also crossed the landmark of 150 sixes in his ODI career.

Dhoni, playing his second ODI as non-captain after leading the team for nearly a decade, started slowly but went on to score a 100 off 106 balls. He finished at 134 off 122 balls with 6 sixes and 10 boundaries. During his innings, Dhoni also became the first Indian batsman to hit 200 ODI sixes.

Kedar Jadhav, last match’s centurion, contributed with 22 runs in his 10 ball innings that had one six and three boundaries.

Haren Pandya (19 off 9) and Ravindra Jadeja (16 off 8) helped with quick runs in slog overs. 

Earlier, England skipper Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the Barabati Stadium here on Thursday.

Woakes, who wrecked the Indian innings in the very beginning ended up with a figure of 60 for 4 in his quota of 10 overs. 

Liam Plunkett, although bagged two wickets gave away 91 runs in his 10 overs.

 

India made one change to their side which defeated England in the first ODI on Sunday at Pune.

Pacer Umesh Yadav was replaced by Bhuvneshwar Kumar while, for the visitors, pacer Liam Plunkett.
