Australian skipper Steve Smith today became the third Australian batsman after Sir Don Bradman and Matthew Hayden to complete 5,000 runs in Test cricket.
It took Smith 97 innings to complete the 5000-run feat.
Smith got the support of right-handed batsman Glenn Maxwell to complete this feat.
Both Smith and Maxwell shone with the bat as Australia posted 299/4 in their first innings on the opening day of their third cricket Test against India at the JSCA International Stadium here on Thursday.
At stumps, Smith was unbeaten at 117 while Maxwell was batting on 82.
For India, fast bowler Umesh Yadav returned figures of 2/63 while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja and star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up a wicket each for India.
