The ICC Women's World T20 witnessed a unique sight during the South Africa vs Sri Lanka match - a couple playing together. Yes. A married couple to be precise.
In the eight match of the tournament, South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk and her wife Marizanne Kapp batted together in the 100-run chase and led their team to the victory with an important 67-run stand for the third wicket.
This is the first time when a married couple batted together in an ICC tournament.
The Proteas duo got married on July 8 this year and became the second pair after Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu of New Zealand to be hitched amongst the current crop of cricketers.
Van Niekerk and Kapp made their debut in the International cricket during the 2009 Women’s World Cup with the space of just two days.
Earlier, a clinical performance by the South Africa bowlers saw Lanka to project a paltry score of 99/8 in the 20 overs. However, the Proteas also struggled in the chase, as they lost their openers, with the score reading 6/2 at the time.
But it was Van Niekerk and Kapp who put up a 67-run partnership to help South Africa chase the target with ease, with 9 balls to spare.
Van Niekerk scored unbeaten 33 runs in 45 balls while her better half got out on 38 runs.
