New Delhi: Just a month after surpassing Sachin Tendulkar to become the world’s youngest batsman to complete 10,000 Test runs, England skipper Alastair Cook overhauled former India captain Sunil Gavaskar to score most runs as a Test opener.
During his knock of 81 runs against Pakistan at Lord’s on Friday, Cook broke Gavaskar’s 29-year-old record of most runs scored by an opener in Test cricket.
He went past Gavaskar’s total of 9,607 runs in the opening innings. Gavaskar scored these runs as an opener in 203 innings at an average of 50.30, whereas Alastair Cook took 219 innings to reach the coveted landmark.
Cook was dismissed by Pakistan’s pace battery Mohammad Amir, who is making a comeback after six years.
On May 30 this year, England’s Test team captain Alastair Cook has surpassed legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the youngest cricketer ever to reach the 10,000-run landmark in Test cricket.
Aged 31 years, five months and five days, Cook broke Tendulkar’s record who was 31 years, ten months and twenty days old when he reached the coveted landmark in 2005.
He is also the 11th player on the list of all-time lading run scorers in Test cricket.
