Virat Kohli took just 18 innings to reach the 1000-run mark in Australia

Virat Kohli achieved yet another milestone on Saturday during day three of the first Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Kohli became the fifth Indian batsman to hit thousand runs in Australia after Sachin Tendulkar (1809 runs), VVS Laxman (1236 runs) and Rahul Dravid (1143 runs) and Sehwag (1031 runs). However, all of Sehwag's runs have not come for India. He hit 948 runs for India and 83 for ICC World XI.

Therefore, Kohli is only the fourth ever to achieve the feat for India in Test cricket.

Kohli needed just five runs to reach the milestone after he failed to make a mark in the first innings, where he fell for three after a brilliant diving catch by Usman Khawaja at gully of the bowling off Pat Cummins.

The 30-year-old took a single off Nathan Lyon in the 32nd over of India's second innings to achieve the feat.

Kohli is the 28th batsman overall to record 1000 runs in Australia in Test cricket. Colin Cowdrey of England has the most runs in Australia, with 1618 runs from 27 matches.

He took just 18 innings to reach the mark -- the fourth fastest among all the batsmen. However, he is the fastest Indian to do so.

Before the series started, Kohli had 992 runs in 8 Tests he played Down Under with a highest score of 169, which he recorded at the MCG when India last travelled in 2014.

Prior to the series, Kohli averaged 62, with five Test tons and two half-centuries to his name.

He is also the only Indian batsman to record five hundreds in Test cricket in Australia. Out of which, four came in the previous tour (2014-15) and one during his first tour of Down Under in 2011-12
