Vinesh Phogat is a former wrestler and Congress candidate from Haryana's Julana constituency. Phogat won three back-to-back gold medals at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG). She won the gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games. She defeated Yui Susaki, the reigning Olympic champion, in the 2024 Paris Olympics to become the first international wrestler and the first Indian woman wrestler to make it to the Olympic final. However, on the second day of her competition, she weighed 100 grams more than the allowed limit and was disqualified. She announced her retirement after her disqualification. She is facing Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Captain Yogesh Bairagi and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Kavita Dalal in Julana in the 2024 Haryana Assembly polls.

The tensions heightened on Sunday as wrestler Vinesh Phogat, along with her cousin sister Sangeeta Phogat, and other players, made an attempt to breach the security barricades at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was inaugurating the new "temple of democracy".
Notably, several wrestlers have been staging a dharna at Jantar Mantar since April 23, demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Responding to India TV's questions, WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, "You're not the Supreme Court... neither the court... why didn't you wait for the committee's report... I am ready to face the action on the basis of the report of the Delhi Police."
His remarks come a day after the 100th episode of Modi's "Mann ki Baat" radio programme was broadcast.
