Vinesh Phogat confirmed India's fourth medal at the Paris Olympics after she became the first female wrestler for the country to qualify for the Gold medal match in her 50kg weight category. Vinesh Phogat had earlier stunned the Olympic and four-time world champion Yui Susaki in the round of 16. She then defeated former European champion Oksana Livach in her quarterfinals to reach the semis at the Paris Games.

Vinesh Phogat scripted history by becoming the first player in women's international wrestling to beat Japanese champion and defending gold medallist Yui Susaki before winning her quarter-final bout at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh will now play her semi-final bout on Tuesday, August 6 itself.

Vinesh Phogat had earlier stunned defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki in her opening round of 16 bout. Vinesh has now stormed into the semifinals with a win over Oksana Livach. She has become the first Indian woman to reach the semis at the Olympics.

"I am returning my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjun Award. Many thanks to the Almighty for bringing us to this condition," Vinesh Phogat wrote on social media and also added a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

The Sports Ministry of India decided to suspend the newly-elected WFI body for the 'hasty' announcement of U-15 and U-20 nationals. The Ministry also said that the "newly elected body appears to be in complete control of former office bearers in complete disregard to the Sports Code."
