Tharanga is one of those players who has flattered to deceive throughout his career. Blessed with the natural talent to both caress and bludgeon the ball, the left-handed opener has however failed to realise his full potential as a batsman. While his Test record doesn't make for impressive reading, his recent ODI form has been a touch better. Given the lack of experience in the current Lankan side, Tharanga is one of the few experienced campaigners left in the Islanders' setup and he could play a crucial role at the 2019 World Cup.
