Born in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, Shivpal Yadav is the leader of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia). He is the uncle of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, and is the younger brother of of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav . He graduated from KK Degree College, Etawah (Kanpur University) in 1976 and went on to Lucknow University to pursue his Bachelor of physical education which he completed in 1977. Shivpal Yadav first became the Member of Legislative Assembly in 1996 from the Jaswantnagar Assembly constituency. Later in 2003, Yadav became a cabinet member in the UP government headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav. Under Akhilesh Yadav's government, Shivpal Yadav was made cabinet minister again in 2012. In 2009, when the then UP SP president passed away, Shivpal was appointed the president. He was also appointed as the Leader of the Opposition when Mayawati was the chief minister. In 2016, the leader was appointed as the Samajwadi Party state chief. However, he resigned days later from all the party posts and ministerial berths held by him in the Uttar Pradesh government due to internal party feuds. After leaving the Samajwadi party, Shivpal Yadav founded the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party to retain socialist values in August 2018. Ahead of the 2022 UP elections, Shivpal Yadav said that his party's priority is to form an alliance with the Samajwadi Party, saying that it should be allotted 100 seats. Earlier this month, Akhilesh Yadav also said that he would be working to join hands with Shivpal Yadav on Mulayam Singh's birthday.

"If Akhilesh thinks, I am in touch with the Bhartiya Janata Party, why doesn't he expel me," Shivpal Yadav said on Thursday.
Azam Khan is lodged in jail in connection with a number of cases of theft, criminal intimidation, and illegal encroachment among others.
Talks are doing the rounds in the political circles that as part of the plan, the BJP might send Shivpal Yadav to Rajya Sabha and give his Jaswantnagar seat to his son Aditya Yadav.
The speculation gained strength after the sulking socialist leader Shivpal Yadav recently met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath amid reports of strains in the SP-led alliance.
Shivpal Yadav had contested the Assembly elections from Jaswantnagar seat of Etawah on the symbol of the Samajwadi Party headed by his nephew Akhilesh Yadav.
SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav’s younger brother had fought polls from his family bastion Jaswantnagar and won after a truce with his Akhilesh Yadav.
Shivpal's name was missing in the list of campaigners released by the Samajwadi Party released ahead of the Assembly elections.
Karhal, a Yadav-dominated seat, is represented by Sobaran Singh Yadav since 2007. The BJP had last won this seat in 2002 when its candidate Sovaran Singh had won the elections.
The leader also said that he will be contesting on Akhilesh Yadav- led Samajwadi Party's seat instead of his own party Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party.
"Our main aim is to remove BJP from power and SP should come into power under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav," Shivpal added.

Allegedly upset over his diminishing stature in the party, Shivpal had resigned and floated a new party altogether in 2018 and called it Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia.
Shivpal Yadav also hit out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that people are disappointed with the party.
The SP has already announced an alliance with Om Prakash Rajbhar's Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SPSP). Akhilesh Yadav, who is an SP MP from Azamgarh and regarded as the CM face of his party, earlier announced his decision of not contesting next year's UP polls.
Talking to India TV, Shivpal Yadav said that he still hopes that in order to fight and defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in UP, his estranged nephew Akhilesh Yadav should join hands with him.
Shivpal Yadav said that he would wait till October 11 to get a response from Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav after which he would decide his own course of action.
Shivpal Yadav said he will abide by whatever decision Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Yadav takes, but expressed doubt if Akhilesh will agree to it.
